Completed in 2010 for the University of Canterbury.
All on site management, craneage, structural and precast reinforced concrete, building and joinery trades were undertaken by C Lund & Son Ltd.
Built to achieve the best green star rating for a building of its type it is seven storeys high with an interior atrium that extends the full height of the building.
Getting the project off the ground included rerouting all of the existing services (power, water, storm water and sewerage) on site that were still required for the adjacent buildings. The biggest early hurdle was lowering the groundwater in order to construct the large underground waterproof basement built to hold plant to run the building's specialist systems.
The building demonstrates the skills of the C Lund & Son Ltd precast team. The structure of the building consists of interlocking precast frames. These frames had to be accurate. Each frame links into the next frame midway through the next storey at eye level so had to be exactly right.
The building contains some of the most complex mechanical services of any building ever built by C Lund & Son Ltd. The number of services supplied to the labs in the building is significant and includes seven different types of water systems, oxygen gas and vacuum systems to remove fumes heating and air conditioning.
Our joinery team produced all interior joinery for the build including cabinetry, tops and feature wall paneling.
