Pioneer Learn to Swim Pool

C. Lund & Son Ltd constructed a new covered-in learn to swim pool, as an extension to the existing Pioneer Stadium in Christchurch.

The design incorporated a number of complex elements including the ability to raise and lower the water level depending on the age of the children using it. This required pipework carefully designed to ensure accurate flow-rates during drainage and filling.

Prior to placing reinforcing and pouring concrete for the pool itself, careful placement of plastic waterstops was required, which were then incorporated into the concrete, and were welded together. The concrete was poured in many small loads (approximately 50 pours), in order to protect the waterproofing and to form critical construction joints.

Precise placement of formwork to ensure an even surface for the tiles, and a comprehensive waterproofing system demonstrate the attention to detail applied in this project, ultimately contributing to a popular space for young swimmers.
